About 750 km from Los Angeles, I arrived in San Francisco on the ninth day. I stayed at the home of Mr. M, whom Mr. A had introduced me to. Mr. M runs a burger shop in downtown San Francisco, about a 10-minute drive from his house. He has one employee, and his wife helps out in between doing housework. The shop isn’t very big, but there’s never a shortage of customers.
He mentioned that he plans to open a Japanese restaurant someday, but I was really impressed by his burger shop right here in the heart of the U.S. The couple has a daughter named Ai, who is in kindergarten. At first, she looked at me—a strange middle-aged man who had arrived by bicycle—with suspicion, but once we warmed up to each other, we became so close that we were even fooling around together.
The next day, right before opening, Mr. M kindly drove me around the main areas of Cisco. He had heard my wish to explore the city by bicycle, so he suggested we do this first. Thanks to that, I was able to get a feel for the town’s atmosphere and get my bearings, which was a huge help for my subsequent sightseeing. Cisco is a city with many hills, but the view of the cityscape from the top of a hill I’d cycled up, and the blue ocean beyond, was truly exceptional.
I intended to visit as many National Parks in North America as possible, and I planned my route with that in mind (visiting 9 locations). I’d considered cycling to Yosemite National Park, but in the end, I joined a tour on a limousine bus that I found at the tourist office. It was a somewhat grueling tour—a 500 km round trip from San Francisco, taking 10 hours (3 hours on-site).
Right before my eyes stood El Capitan, the sight I’d longed to see. Standing over 1,000 meters tall, the world’s tallest monolith was truly magnificent, and I could understand why it’s a mecca for climbers, with ascents taking 4–5 days.
ロスから約750㎞、9日目にシスコに到着しました。Aさんから紹介されたMさん宅にやっかいに。Mさんは自宅から車で10分ほどのダウンタウンでバーガーショップを開業しています。従業員は１人、家事の合間に奥さんも手伝っています。さほど広くないお店ですが、お客が絶えることはありません。
いずれ日本料理店を出す予定だそうですが、本場でのバーガーショップには感心しました。ご夫婦には幼稚園児のAiちゃんという娘さんがいます。最初は自転車でやってきた変なオジサンをいぶかしげに見ていましたが、やがて打ち解けると、二人でふざけ合うほど仲よくなりました。
翌日、さっそくMさんが開店前にシスコ市内の主なところを車で回ってくれました。自転車で市内観光をしたいという私の希望を聞いてくれ、ならばその前にということです。おかげで街の雰囲気や土地勘がつかめ、その後の市内観光に大助かりでした。シスコは坂の多い街ですが、自転車で上りきった丘から見る街並みやその先に見える青い海は格別でした。
私は、北米でできるだけ多くの National Park へ行くつもりで、コースもそれを意識して決定しました(9ヵ所観光)。ヨセミテ国立公園へは自転車でと考えましたが、結局、観光局で探したリムジンバスで行くツアーに参加しました。シスコから往復500㎞、10時間（現地3時間）の少々ハードなツアーです。
目の前には念願のエル・キャピタンがそそり立っていました。1,000mを超える世界一高い一枚岩は実に壮大で、4-5日かけて登るというクライマーの聖地である理由も理解できました。
The day after the tour, Mr. M’s wife and I went to the AAA (American Automobile Association) branch in San Francisco to gather information for my trip. In addition to AAA’s own materials, they told us where to find resources specifically for cyclists.

ツアーの翌日、奥さんと旅の資料収集のためにトリプルエー AAA （American Automobile Association） のシスコ支局へ。AAA の独自資料のほか、自転車専用資料の入手先を教えてくれました。
