I felt so at home that I ended up relaxing at Mr. and Mrs. M’s house for a full 10 days. I decided to leave the day after watching AI-chan’s tap dance recital.
“I’ve been such a burden on you all this time—thank you so much.”
“Oh, it’s fine, really. H, please be careful on your journey. And here—it’s not much, but this is a parting gift.”
With that, Mr. M handed me an envelope.
“A going-away gift? I can’t take advantage of your kindness any more than I already have.”
Then, from the side, his wife said,
“Don’t be shy.”
“But…”
“It’s fine, just take it.”
“All right then, I’ll gladly accept it. Thank you.”
And finally,
“AI-chan, goodbye. Stay well.”
“Okay. You stay well too, Uncle.”
The three of them stood there watching me leave for what seemed like forever.
Inside the envelope was a $100 bill. I carefully tucked away that heartfelt $100 bill.
A Follow-Up
After returning home, I sent Mr. M a thank-you letter.
[Thank you so much for everything you did for me back then. I kept the $100 Mr. and Mrs. M gave me tucked inside my passport as a good-luck charm and continued my journey. Thanks to that, I was able to return home safely. Please consider this my good-luck charm for you next time.]
In his reply, Mr. M wrote:
[I’m so glad you made it home safely. I received it safely. Since then, I’ve opened a Japanese restaurant, and now that I have three employees, things are finally starting to take off.]

居心地がよかったせいで、10日間もＭさん宅でノンビリしてしまいました。AIちゃんのタップダンスの発表会を観た翌日に出発することにしました。
「すっかりお世話になりっぱなしで、本当にありがとうございました」
「うん。いいから、いいから。Ｈ君もこの先気を付けてね。それから、これ少しだけど餞別に」
そう言うとＭさんは封筒を差し出しました。
「餞別って。これ以上甘えられませんから」
すると、横から奥さんが
「遠慮なんかしないの」
「でも……」
「いいから、もらっときなさい」
「そうですか、なら遠慮なくいただきます。ありがとうございます」
そして最後に、
「AIちゃん、さよなら。元気でね」
「うん。おじさんも元気でね」
３人でいつまでも見送ってくれました。
封筒の中には100＄紙幣が。私は、この気持ちのこもった100＄紙幣を大切にしまいました。
後日談
帰国後、Ｍさんにお礼の手紙を出しました。
〔その節は大変お世話なり、ありがとうございました。Ｍさんにいただいた100＄は御守りとして、パスポートに忍ばせて旅を続けました。そのおかげで無事帰ることができました。今度はＭさんの御守りにしてください〕
Ｍさんからの返信には、
〔無事に帰られて何よりです。確かに受け取りました。その後、私は日本料理店をオープンし、いまでは従業員も３人に増え、やっと軌道に乗って来たところです〕
