North America [18]: Got some 26-inch tires

The next morning, Jeff was in the kitchen making pancakes for breakfast. It seemed he and Phil took turns preparing breakfast. After breakfast, we went shopping.

His car is a light brown Datsun. First, he took me to his favorite bike shop.

The size of the built-in pump was about 40 cm long, and he had also brought along a deflated one. We found one of the same size made by Zephyr (France)*.

翌朝、ジェフはキッチンで朝食のパンケーキを焼いていました。朝食の支度はフィルスと交代でするようです。食後は買い出しへ。

彼の車はライトブラウンのダットサンです。まずは行き付けの自転車店に案内してもらいました。

直付けの空気入れのサイズは長さ約40㎝、つぶれた空気入れも持参していました。フランス・ゼファール社*製の同じサイズのものが見つかりました。

The hose is designed for French valves, but luckily the threaded end is the same as the one on my Woods hose. That solved my air pump problem. Even luckier, they had a 26-inch tire in stock.

The shop owner said he didn’t know when he’d gotten it, but it was as good as new. After that, I picked up some supplies and consumables, and my gear was all set.

As soon as I got back, I changed the tire. I swapped out the worn-out rear tire for the old “new” one I’d found earlier. Now I won’t have to worry about tires for a while.

At dinner, we started chatting about all sorts of things while drinking beer again.

* The company started around 1880 under the name Pourait, beginning as a manufacturer of sheet metal bicycle parts such as clips and lamp brackets. In 1935, it merged with Morin, a manufacturer of bicycle pumps, and changed its name to Pourait-Morin. In the 1990s, the company name was changed to Zéfal, which was the brand name at the time. ホースはフレンチ用ですが、幸いにもねじ込み部分が私のウッズ用ホースと同じです。これで空気入れの問題は解決しました。さらにラッキーなことに26インチサイズのタイヤがあったのです。

店主の話しでは、いつ仕入れたか分からないということですが、新品にはかわりません。その後、備品や消耗品を調達して、携行品の準備はすべて整いました。

戻るとすぐにタイヤの交換です。再びすり減ったうしろタイヤを、先ほどの古い新品(?)と交換しました。これで当分タイヤの心配はありません。

夕食になると、またビールを飲みながらいろいろと話し始めました。

* 1880年ごろ、プトレ(Pourait )という名称でスタートし、クリップ、ランプブラケットなど板金関連の自転車部品メーカーとしてスタートした。1935年に自転車のポンプを製造するモーラン(Morin)と合併し、プトレモーランと社名を変更し、90年代にブランド名であったゼファールに社名に変更した。現在スポーツ系自転車で使われるプレスタバルブ(フランス式バルブ)はモーランによって考案されたものである。[日本語版Wikipediaより引用]
