The next day, the three of us and our dog drove to North Cascades National Park for a hike. It was about 100 km one way. Our dog seemed used to the ride and sat quietly in the back of the car.
According to Jeff, this national park is the most popular among climbers and hikers in the United States. He showed us a hiking trail that he and his friends often visit.
The mountains were dotted with glaciers, lush green trees, rivers flowing with abundant water, and scattered lakes. We were able to fully enjoy the great outdoors for a good half-day.
翌日は３人と１匹、車でノースカスケイド国立公園までハイキングに。片道約100㎞。愛犬はうしろの荷台で慣れたようすで、おとなしくしています。
ジェフの話しではこの国立公園がアメリカでは登山家やハイカーに一番人気があるそうです。ジェフたちがよく行くハイキングコースを案内してもらいました。
山々には氷河、緑濃い樹々、水量ゆたかな川、点在する湖。半日のあいだタップリと大自然を満喫できました。
Dinner over beer is lively, as usual. When I pull out my dictionary, Jeff, who’s a little tipsy, jokes,
“Another dictionary? Nobyu, give it a rest already.”
Just then, the phone rings. He answers it and tells me to take it. It seems to be Paula.
“Hello, this is H.”
“Hello. This is Paula. H, how’s it going? Are you having fun?”
“Yes, we went hiking in the national park today. I’m a little tired, but it was amazing.”
“Did you get everything you wanted?”
“Yes, thanks to Jeff, I was able to get everything. It’s perfect.”
“That’s great. Right now, I’m drinking the alcohol you gave me as a gift with my friends. It’s really delicious.”
“Paula, do you love it?”
“Yes, I love it.”
“Paula taught me in class that if you want to express a stronger feeling than ‘like,’ you use ‘love,’”
“That’s right. You remembered that well.”
“Of course. Well then, cheers!”
On the other end of the line, Paula was laughing. It seemed I was getting a little tipsy myself.
Take It Easy
On the morning of my departure, it was drizzling. Jeff sprayed waterproofing spray all over me, then gave me a cycling cap with a single red line running from front to back on a pink background, saying it was a souvenir.
“I like this cap. I’m going to wear it from now on. Jeff, Phil, thank you both for everything. It’s been a really fun three days. Well, I’m off.”
“Nobyu, take it easy. ”
“Yeah, take it easy.”
As I straddled the saddle,
“Jeff, good luck with the race. I’ll send you a postcard from somewhere.”
“O.K. Take it easy!”
40 km to the Canadian border, 90 km to Vancouver. I’ll be in Canada by the end of the day. The Rockies are just ahead.

ビールを飲みながらの夕食は例によって賑やかです。私が辞書を持ち出すと、少々酔っ払ったジェフは冗談まじりに
「また辞書か。ノビュ、もういい加減にしてくれ」
そんなとき、電話がかかってきました。電話に出た彼は、私に代わるように言っています。どうやらパウラ先生のようです。
「もしもし、Ｈです」
「はい。パウラです。Ｈさん、どうです。楽しんでいますか?」
「ええ、きょうは国立公園へハイキングへ行ってきました。すこし疲れましたけど最高でした」
「欲しかったものは手に入りましたか?」
「はい、ジェフのおかげで全部揃えることができました。パーフェクトです」
「それは、よかったです。いま、私はプレゼントされたお酒を友だちと飲んでいます。とてもおいしいですよ」
“Paula, do you love it?”
“Yes, I love it.”
「ライクよりもっと好きな表現をする場合はラブを使うと、授業でパウラが教えてくれたんです」
「そうでした。よく覚えていましたね」
「もちろんです。じゃあ、乾杯！」
電話の向こうで、パウラ先生は笑っていました。どうやら、私も少し酔っ払ったようでした。
Take It Easy
出発の朝、小雨が降っていました。ジェフはわたしの身体中に防水スプレーを吹き掛けると、記念だといってピンク地に前からうしろへ赤い１本のラインの入ったサイクルキャップをくれました。
「いいね、このキャップ。これからずっと被って行くよ。ジェフ、フィルス、２人ともいろいろありがとう。本当に楽しい３日間だった。じゃあ、行くよ」
“Nobu, take it easy. ”
「うん、テイクイットイージーだな」
サドルにまたがりながら、
「ジェフ、レースがんばれよ。どっかの国から絵はがきを送るよ」
”O.K. Take it easy! ”
カナダとの国境まで40㎞、バンクーバーまでは90㎞。きょう中にはカナダです。もうすぐロッキーです。
