What surprised me when I looked at the brochure I received at the campground was its size—approximately 850 hectares. It’s actually even larger than the vast Palace of Versailles, which I had visited the day before.
Compared to parks in Tokyo, the largest one, Showa Memorial Park, is about 150 hectares, while Kasai Rinkai Park and Koganei Park are both just under 80 hectares; even if you add these three parks together, they still amount to less than half of the Bois de Boulogne’s size.
While it boasts a wealth of sports facilities, such as the Longchamp Racecourse and the Roland Garros tennis courts, the true essence of the Bois de Boulogne lies in its role as a place of relaxation for the people of Paris. In addition to numerous gardens, botanical gardens, and ponds, it even features a zoo and a circus. Of course, I also saw many people enjoying walks, picnics, and jogging.
キャンプ場でもらったパンフレットを見て驚いたのは約850haというその大きさです。なんと前日訪れた広いベルサイユ宮殿よりさらに大きいのです。
東京の公園と比較すると、一番大きい昭和記念公園が約150ha、葛西臨海公園と小金井公園がともに80ha弱、この三つの公園を足してもまだ半分以下です。
ロンシャン競馬場、テニス場ローラン・ギャロスなど各種スポーツ施設の充実もそうですが、ブローニュの森の本来の姿はパリ市民の憩いの場として利用されていることです。多くの庭園、植物園や池などのほかに動物園、サーカスまであります。もちろん散歩やピクニック、ジョギングなどを楽しむ人も大勢見かけました。

Paris is divided into 20 administrative districts, with the area around the Louvre Museum designated as the 1st arrondissement. It’s similar to Tokyo’s 23 wards. What’s interesting is that the districts are numbered in clockwise order, starting from the 1st arrondissement. On the south bank of the Seine, the districts are 5th, 6th, and 7th from east to west; the Eiffel Tower is located in the 7th arrondissement, and across the river in the 8th arrondissement stands the Arc de Triomphe.
If you ask a Parisian which arrondissement a place is in, they’ll likely picture the location immediately. The Bois de Boulogne is in the 16th arrondissement, the outermost one on the second ring, marking the western edge of Paris. After passing the Eiffel Tower, the Seine changes direction to flow south, then immediately turns 180 degrees north. The 16th arrondissement, which includes the Bois de Boulogne, is surrounded by this U-turn of the Seine.
You might think that the western edge of Paris is quite far from the center, but in reality, it’s not that far. The Arc de Triomphe, located north of the campground, and the Eiffel Tower to the east are both about 2 kilometers away. From the Arc de Triomphe, it’s a straight line of about 3 kilometers to the Champs-Élysées, the Place de la Concorde, and the Louvre Museum.
In other words, it’s about 5 kilometers from the campground to the center of Paris—a distance that’s perfectly manageable for sightseeing by bicycle.
これはブローニュの森の中のグラウンドの写真です。
パリの行政区はルーブル美術館の周辺を１区として20区まであります。東京の23区みたいなもんです。おもしろいのは１区を中心に時計回りに区画が順にナンバリングされていることです。セーヌ川の南側は東から５､６､７区と並び、エッフェル塔はその７区に、対岸へ渡り８区には凱旋門があります。パリ市民なら何区と聞けばすぐに場所が思い浮かびそうです。ブローニュの森は２周目の一番外の16区、パリの西端になります。セーヌ川はエッフェル塔を過ぎると南方向へ流れを変え、またすぐに180度北へ流れを変えます。そのＵターンするセーヌ川に囲まれてブローニュの森を含む16区があります。
パリの西端というと中心から結構離れていると感じるかもしれませんが、実際はそれほどでもありません。キャンプ場から北に位置するの凱旋門、同じく東のエッフェル塔までともに２キロほど、凱旋門からシャンゼリゼ通り、コンコルド広場そしてルーブル美術館まで一直線で３キロほど。つまりキャンプ場からパリの中心まで約５キロ、自転車で十分市内観光ができる距離なのです。
The photo shows a group of cyclists riding along the ring road around the Bois de Boulogne. I often saw them in the mornings and evenings as they headed to and from sightseeing in the city. Whenever I saw young people pedaling furiously, I couldn’t help but shout, “Go, go!!”
写真はブローニュの森の周回道路を走るサイクリストの一団です。朝夕、市内観光の行き帰りによく目にしていました。必死にベダルを踏み込む若者には思わず「ゴー、ゴーッ!!」と声をかけてしまいます。
