This is a postcard of Paris.
これはパリの絵ハガキです。
France leads the way in various cultural fields, including fashion, art, and film. Paris continues to attract countless tourists. I think it was precisely this sense of longing and admiration that led me to choose Paris as the final stop on my European trip.
I stayed in Paris for about ten days, using a campground as my base. I saw not only the glamour of the main streets but also the grime of the back alleys. It was the same scene you’d find in any major city. However, despite visiting many different places during my stay in Paris, I don’t really have any standout memories.
For example, in Portugal, I took a liking to Lisbon and stayed there for about three weeks. The diner at the top of the hill, the cafés in the back alleys, the fishing spots along the Tagus River, the brothels in the harbor, and the faces of the various people I interacted with—all of these come to mind.
Even if I were suddenly dropped right in the middle of Lisbon today, I think I could guide you anywhere and tell you exactly what happened there. Many Portuguese people working in the service industry had worked in English-speaking countries, so they were more fluent in English than their counterparts in Spain or France. Well, though I did meet a girl at a brothel who spoke broken Japanese for business purposes.
I think I could guide someone to the tourist spots even if I were dropped in the middle of Paris. However, there isn’t really anything specific there. In other words, there was no human connection or communication.
I think that comes down to the language barrier. I’m absolutely hopeless at French, and only a very limited number of French people speak English—the elderly, in particular, almost never did. I mentioned before that the only places in Europe where English doesn’t work are Spain and France, but with Spanish, you can get by using Japanese pronunciation based on the Romanized script. I even managed to pick up a few Spanish words myself. However, when it comes to French, on top of the difficult pronunciation, the sheer number of inflections left me completely at a loss. There’s no way I could ever initiate a conversation in French.
On the other hand, it’s often said that the French don’t speak English.
Is it because they take pride in their beautiful native French? Or do they not want to speak the language of their neighboring country, with whom they’ve had many conflicts throughout history? Or perhaps they’re embarrassed by their own broken English? People speculate about various reasons, but I believe the main reason is simply that they don’t learn it in school.
However, recently, even in France, children have started learning English as early as elementary school.
I’ve entered an era where Japanese imitation crab sticks line the shelves of supermarkets, young people are obsessed with Japanese anime and cosplay, and sake tastings are held in Paris. It would be no surprise if the French attitude toward English and their approach to it were changing.
That said, communication difficulties while traveling weren’t limited to France. As I continued my travels, the language barrier was always a source of regret. “I wish we could communicate better,” I always thought.
ファッション、アート、映画など様々な文化をリードするフランス。多くの観光客を引き付けてやまないパリ。私もそんな思いと憧れでヨーロッパの旅の最後にパリを選んだ気がします。
キャンプ場をねぐらとして10日間ほどパリに滞在しました。表通りの華やかさだけでなく路地裏の薄汚さも覗きました。それはどこの大都市でも見る光景と同じです。ただ、パリ滞在中に色々な所に行った割にこれといった印象がないのです。
例えばポルトガルではリスボンが気に入って３週間ほど滞在しました。坂道を上がった先にある食堂、路地裏のカフェ、テージョ川沿いの魚釣り場、港の娼婦館、そして色々と私が関わった人の顔など、それら全てが頭の中に浮かんできます。今、ポーンとリスボンの街の真ん中に放り出されたとしてもどこへでも案内できますし、そこで何があったのか話すこともできると思います。サービス業に従事するポルトガル人は英語圏で働いていた人も多く、スペインやフランスに比べるとより英語が達者でした。まあ、娼婦館では商売上カタコトの日本語を話す娘もいましたが。
パリの街に放り出されても観光地へ案内できると思います。ただし、これといって何かがあるわけではありません。つまり人との関わり、コミュニケーションがなかったのです。
それは言葉の問題だと思います。私はフランス語がまるでダメですし、英語を話すフランス人はごく限られた人たち、まずお年寄りはほぼ話しませんでした。以前、ヨーロッパで英語が通じないのはスペインとフランスと記しましたが、スペイン語はほぼローマ字読みの日本語の発音で何とかなります。私にもいくつかのスペイン語を覚えることができました。しかし、フランス語となると発音の難しさに加えて変化の多さと完全にお手上げでした。まずもって私の方からフランス語で喋りかけることなどできません。
一方、フランス人は英語を話さないといわれています。
自国の美しいフランス語にプライドを持っている？ 昔から争い事の多かった隣国の英語だから話したくない？ いやいや、中途半端な自分の英語が恥ずかしいんじゃないの？ などなど色々といわれますが、やはり一番の理由は学校で習わないことだと思います。
ただし、最近ではフランスでもいわゆる小学校から英語を勉強するようになりました。
スーパーに日本製のカニカマが並び、若者は日本のアニメやコスプレに夢中になり、パリで日本酒の利き酒が行われる、そんな時代になったのです。フランス人の英語に対する考え方や取り組み方に変化があっても不思議ではありません。
もっとも旅行中のコミュニケーション不足は、フランスに限ったことではありませんでした。旅を続けていていつも残念に思うのは言葉の壁でした。 ［もっとコミュニケーションがとれたらなぁ］いつもそう思っていました。
