The ferry service from Norway to the Netherlands had ended four days earlier. Against my will, I found myself returning to the Jutland Peninsula once again. Although this meant revisiting both Denmark and West Germany, I decided to record this as part of my journey through the Netherlands.
At 6:30 AM, I woke up to an alarm clock for the first time in a while. Since there was a fair distance from the campground to the ferry terminal, and food and drink on board were expensive, I planned to get up early and make sandwiches for lunch.
On the way, I stopped by the post office to mail a letter to Japan and arrived at the port at 9:20 AM. I exchanged my remaining funds for Danish kroner at a bank in the port, and then boarded the ferry without any apparent security checks. As scheduled, the ferry departed Kristiansand at 10:00 AM and headed for Hanstholm, Denmark.
Hanstholm is located at the northern tip of the Jutland Peninsula, making this the shortest crossing across the North Sea. Distance-wise, it’s about one-fifth the distance of the journey across the North Sea to Amsterdam. Even so, it’s a 4-hour and 15-minute boat trip.
[It’s rocky after all] I knew there would be some wind even before leaving the harbor, but once we reached the open sea, the waves were higher than I expected, and it started to drizzle. It seems the sea is getting rough.
I’ve never gotten sick on buses or boats since I was a child. Even during this trip, I’d used ferries to travel from the UK to Spain, from Spain to Morocco, and from Tunisia to Italy… Hmm, I’m actually getting seasick.
[No way. I’m not even in the mood for a sandwich.] I had no choice but to stay put on the ship and wait for the ferry to arrive at the port.
At 2:30 PM, we arrived in Helsingør, a little later than scheduled. After a quick check, I entered Denmark again.
Strangely enough, the seasickness vanished the moment I stepped ashore, and I suddenly got hungry. I wolfed down the sandwich I’d packed for lunch, thinking, [“It’s my second time in Denmark, after all.”] It actually felt a bit nostalgic.
When I entered from West Germany, I drove along the eastern side of the Jutland Peninsula toward Copenhagen, but this time my destination is the Netherlands. I headed south along the opposite side of the peninsula—the western side.
I had planned to take the coastal road if the weather was good, but I decided to take the road one street inland to avoid the strong wind. That said, given how flat the Jutland Peninsula is, I didn’t expect it to make much of a difference.
[Hm? Maybe over there?] I spotted a grove of trees at the far end of a field ahead. Considering the wind and the light rain, I decided to set up camp a little earlier than usual for the night.
ノルウェーからオランダ行きのフェリーは４日前に終了。意に反して再びユトランド半島へ戻ることになりました。デンマーク、西ドイツともに再訪になりますがオランダの旅の記録としました。
６時半、久しぶりに時計の目覚ましをかけて起きました。キャンプ場からフェリー乗り場までソコソコ距離があるのと、船上での飲食は高くつくので早起きして昼飯用のサンドイッチを作るつもりでいました。
途中、郵便局に寄って日本への手紙を投函し、９時20分に港へ到着しました。港の銀行で残金をデンマーク・クローネに両替、その後チェックらしいチェックもなくフェリーに乗り込みました。
予定通り10時にフェリーはクリスチャンサンを出港、デンマークのハンストホルムへと向かいました。
ハンストホルムはユトランド半島の北の突端に位置しており、北海を挟んで最短距離の航海となります。距離的には北海を縦断するアムステルダムまでの５分の１ほどの距離です。それでも４時間15分の船旅になります。
［やっぱ揺れるな］港を出る前から多少の風があるのは承知していましたが、外海に出ると思っていた以上に波は高く雨もパラつき始めました。どうやら海は荒れ模様です。
私は子供の頃からバスにも船にも酔ったことはありませんでした。この旅行中もイギリスからスペイン、スペインからモロッコ、チュニジアからイタリアと移動にフェリーを利用していましたが……。う～ん、まさかの船酔いです。
［ダメだ。サンドイッチどころじゃないよ］船内でじっとしてフェリーが港へ着くのを待つしかありませんでした。
午後２時半、予定より少々遅れてのハンストホルムへ到着。簡単なチェックで再びデンマーク入国です。
不思議なもので上陸と同時に船酔いは解消、急にお腹が減ってきました。昼飯用のサンドイッチを一気にパクつくと［まさかの２度目のデンマークだもんなぁ］何だか懐かしい気もしてきます。
西ドイツから入国した際にはユトランド半島の東側を走ってコペンハーゲンを目指しましたが今回の目的地はオランダです。半島の逆、西側を南下していきます。
天気がよければ海沿いの道をと思っていたのですが、強い風を避けるために一本内陸の道を行くことにしました。とはいっても平坦なユトランド半島ゆえ効果のほどはあまり期待できそうにありません。
［ん？ あそこにするか］視線の先に畑の奥の林を見つけました。風とパラつく雨を考えてこの日は少し早めの野宿です。
