As the sun set, I had a light dinner and headed to the highlight of the night’s sightseeing: the “red-light district.” I already knew exactly where it was.
The distinctly shady glow of the lights and the winding alleys, which looked like a maze, strangely piqued my sense of adventure. Even though it’s the same “red-light district,” it’s much livelier than the one in Hamburg. That’s probably because, in addition to men looking for a partner for the night, there were many people who looked like tourists coming and going.
A prostitute with flashy makeup tilted her head and smiled as she called out, “omanko” [Huh, Japanese people really pop up everywhere. I bet they’re good customers.]
After wandering around for a few minutes, I turned a corner and suddenly spotted a Southeast Asian prostitute standing there, facing me. Perhaps because she was petite, she looked young. Even through the window, I could tell she was a cute girl with big, bright eyes.
Just as I said, “Good evening,” I heard a voice nearby calling out, “Hey! Over here, over here!”
[Is that a group of Japanese tourists?!] Confused, I said, “Sorry, see you later,” and she replied, “See you later.” [Maybe I’ll come back another time.] My mood suddenly dampened, I walked straight back to the youth hostel.
That day, I was just wandering around Amsterdam with no particular plan. “I want to buy some shoes… I want to go to the barber… I really need to buy some souvenirs to return the favor for the farewell gifts…” That was the general vibe.
日が落ちると晩飯を軽くすませ、夜の観光目玉「飾り窓」へと向かいました。場所はすでに把握ずみです。
いかにもといった怪しい灯りの色、入り組んだ路地は迷路のようで妙に冒険心をくすぐります。同じ「飾り窓」でもハンブルクに比べるとかなり活気があります。今宵の相手探しの男性の他に多くの観光客らしき連中が行き来しているからでしょう。
派手な化粧の娼婦が小首をかしげニッコリしながら「オ××コ」と声をかけてきます。［へぇー、日本人はどこにでも出没してるね。きっといいお客なんだろな］
うろつくこと数分。角を曲がると突然、こちらを向いて立つ東南アジア系の娼婦が目に飛び込んできました。小柄なせいか若く見えます。窓越しにも目のパッチリとした可愛い娘だとわかります。
「こんばんは」と私が声をかけた、その時でした。近くで「おーい！ こっちだ、こっちだ」と、仲間を呼ぶ声が聞こえてきました。
［日本の団体さんかよ?!］戸惑う私の「ごめん、またね」に、彼女も「またね」と返してきました。［出直すか］急に気分をそがれた私はそのまま歩いてユースホステルへ戻りました。
この日はこれといったアテもなくアムステルダムの街をブラブラしていました。「靴も買いたいし… 床屋にも行きたいし… そろそろ餞別のお返しの土産を買わなきゃ…」そんな感じです。
This photo shows the “Mahere Drawbridge” spanning the Amsterdam Canal. “Mahere” means ‘narrow’ or “slender.” The bridge was built in the 17th century, and at that time, it was reportedly just as its name suggests—a “narrow, slender bridge.”
The current bridge was renovated in the 20th century. In the past, the bridge was raised and lowered manually to allow tall ships to pass, but today it is operated electrically. This photo captures the moment a sightseeing boat is passing directly beneath the bridge.
この写真はアムステルダム運河に架かる「マヘレの跳ね橋」です。マヘレとは「細い、痩せた」の意味です。橋が架けられたのは17世紀、当時はその名の通り「細く痩せた橋」だったそうです。
現在の橋は20世紀になってから改修されたものです。この頃は高さのある船の通過時には橋の開閉を手動で行っていましたが今では電動に変わっています。この写真はちょうど橋の下を遊覧船が通過して行くところです。
This photo was taken in the courtyard of the Begijnhof. The church is located about 500 meters south of Dam Square along Kalverstraat, and then a block or two in.
The Beguine Order was a women-only religious order founded in the 14th century, with its main activities centered in Belgium and the Netherlands. Since leaving the order through marriage was permitted, it is said to have functioned primarily as a community for women seeking independence.
The building on the right in the photo is the church; the nuns lived in the houses surrounding the courtyard. The last nun passed away in 1971, but the site has remained a women-only community ever since.
I can’t remember why I went to this convent. Looking at the tourist guide again, it said, “A place where you can forget the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.” I was probably overwhelmed by the bustling city and wanted to go somewhere quiet. Perhaps because they value privacy, photography is now prohibited here.
これは「ベギン会修道院(Begijnhof)」の中庭で撮った写真です。この教会はダム広場からのびるカルファー(Kalver)通りを南へ500ｍほど行き、そこから１､２ブロック入った所にあります。
ベギン修道会は14世紀に設立された女性専用の修道会でベルギーやオランダを活動拠点としています。結婚による脱会も認められていて自立するための女性のコミュニティーといった意味合いが強かったそうです。
写真の右が教会、中庭を囲む家々で修道女たちが暮らしていました。1971年に最後の修道尼が亡くなりましたが、その後も女性専用のコミュニティーとして残りました。
なぜこの修道院に行ったのか思い出せません。改めて観光案内を見ると「アムステルダムの喧騒を忘れさせてくれる場所」とありました。おそらく賑やかなアムステルダムに圧倒され、静かな所に行きたかったのでしょう。プライベート重視のためでしょうか今ではここでの撮影は禁止されています。
