I only had a small amount of money left after exchanging currency when I entered Sweden. Even so, by cutting back on the number of beers I drank, I managed to make it to the border without having to exchange money a second time.
It was Saturday, so shops should still be open in the morning. I turned off the E6 highway to stop in the nearest town and used my remaining money to buy a few things, then got back on the E6 and headed for the border 20 kilometers away.
When I checked the route last night, I initially thought I’d be crossing a river to enter the country. However, upon closer inspection of the map, I realized it wasn’t a river but a fjord.
About 4 kilometers east of the border crossing lies the town of Halden. From there, the fjord—which I had mistaken for a river—Iddefjorden, widens and stretches southward for about 20 kilometers, forming the border. On the western side, 2 kilometers away, lies Singlefjorden, which leads out to the open sea.
I crossed the bridge over the fjord to enter Norway. The customs officer urged me, still on my bicycle, to keep going. It seems there won’t be a passport check after all.
Inside the office adjacent to customs, there is a currency exchange counter, which appears to be open on both Saturdays and Sundays. [Huh, they’re open on Saturdays too. I went out of my way to exchange my francs for Norwegian kroner, though.] The office also has a tourist information desk, showing that they’ve made things convenient for travelers. And so, on Saturday, August 20, I entered Norway.

スウェーデン入国の際に両替したお金は僅かでした。それでもビールの本数を減らして何とか２度目の両替をせずに国境までこれました。
この日は土曜日、午前中ならまだお店は開いてるはずです。E6号線を外れて最寄りの町に寄って僅かに残ったお金で買い物を済ませると、再びE6号線に戻り20キロ先の国境へと向かいました。
昨夜のコースチェックでは川を越えての入国だと最初は思いました。ところが、地図をよく見ると川ではなくフィヨルドです。
入国地点から４キロほど東に Halden(ハルデン)の街があります。そこから川と思われたフィヨルド Iddefjorden(イッディフィヨルド)は幅を広げ、南へ20キロほど続いて国境を形成しています。対する西側２キロに Singlefjorden(シングルフィヨルド)があり、その先は外洋へと続いています。
フィヨルドにかかる橋を渡ってノルウェーへ入国です。税関の係官は自転車に乗った私にそのまま進むように促しています。どうやらパスポートチェックは無さそうです。
税関に隣接する事務所内には両替所があり、(土)(日)ともに開いているようです。［ヘェー、土曜日もやってんだ。わざわざフランをノルウェー・クローネに替えたのになぁ］事務所にはツーリスト・インフォメーションもあり、旅行者に便宜が図られているのがわかります。
こうして８月20日(土)、ノルウェーに入国しました。

This is a photo of the fjord I took right after arriving, from beside the office. This is a Singlefjorden that leads out to the open sea. On the other side lies the town of Halden and the Iddefjorden, which forms the national border.
The fortress south of the town of Halden is known as an impregnable stronghold. From the late 17th century through the 19th century, it was attacked by Swedish forces countless times but never fell. Its location on the fjord seems to have played a significant role in this.
これは入国直後に事務所の横から撮ったフィヨルドの写真です。この先が外洋へと繋がるシングルフィヨルドです。反対側に行くと、ハルデンの街があり、国境を形成しているイッディフィヨルドです。
ハルデンの街の南にある要塞は難攻不落の要塞として知られています。17世紀後半から19世紀にかけて幾度となくスウェーデン軍に攻め込まれ、一度も陥落しなかったのです。それにはフィヨルドという立地条件も一役かっていたようです。
