On the table at the lodge where I was led, a plate was piled high with rice balls. Enka music was playing from the boombox.
“Enka?”
“It’s nice to hear enka abroad, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it feels somehow nostalgic.”
“These rice balls are made with Japanese rice. Please help yourself.”
“I’ll dig right in. It’s been a while since I’ve had Japanese rice. I was invited to the home of someone from the Japanese Embassy in Tunis, and this is my first time since then. It’s probably been four or five months.”
“What did they serve you?”
“It was a full-course Japanese meal with tempura as the main dish. Plus, sake and karaoke.”
“Wow!”
“Back then, I had another friend with me, and the two of us were treated to a feast. “Mmm, delicious!! Japanese rice really is the best. Your wife’s rice balls are delicious.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
The three of them are probably a generation or so older than me. They seem to be enjoying a late summer vacation. They told me they’re traveling around Europe in a rental car. This time, the husband said,
“I heard you’ve been in Oslo for quite a while now?”
“I guess the guy at the front desk mentioned it.”
“As soon as he found out we were Japanese, he started talking about you right away.”
“Actually, I’ve been waiting for a letter from a friend. Man, the cost of living is high, and I don’t want to stay long, but it’s been about two weeks now. Though I did spend about a week driving around the Oslo area.”
“It’s true that the cost of living in Norway is high. That’s why we came here, thinking we’d stay at a campground. So, what about the letter?”
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t receive just one of them. I went to the embassy five times, but I’m leaving tomorrow. What about you guys?”
“Our summer vacation is almost over, too. We’re taking the ferry to Hamburg tomorrow. We thought we’d try our luck at the casino one last time.”
“A casino? I’ve walked all over Hamburg, but I had no idea there was a casino there.”
“Well, it’s a casino inside a hotel, so you might not have noticed. But Hamburg’s casinos are actually pretty famous—they’re quite prestigious. There should be several in different hotels.”
With enka music playing from the boombox, we had plenty to talk about even without alcohol. “It’s raining, too,” they said, so in the end, I ended up staying at their lodge that night.
“Please hit the jackpot at the casino!”
“Okay! See ya!”
After seeing them off as they left early in the morning to catch an early ferry, it was my turn to set off for the Netherlands.
“You should go from Norway to the Netherlands. There’s a ferry from the port in Kristiansand to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I took that one too,” W had told me.
I ended up staying in Oslo longer than expected while waiting for a letter. [Finally, I can leave]—that was my honest feeling. Even so, I was satisfied with the sightseeing tour around Oslo, which was supposed to be just a way to kill time.
案内されたロッジのテーブルの上にはお皿の上いっぱいにおにぎりが盛られていました。ラジカセからは演歌が流れています。
「演歌ですか?」
「外国で聞く演歌もいいでしょう?」
「ええ、何だかなつかしいです」
「おにぎりは日本のお米で握ったんですよ。どうぞ」
「早速いただきます。日本のお米は久しぶりです。チュニスで日本大使館の人の自宅に招待されたんですが、その時以来です。たぶん4-5ヵ月ぶりです」
「何をご馳走になったんですか?」
「天ぷらがメインの日本食のフルコースでした。あと、お酒とカラオケも」
「すごーいッ」
「その頃、もう一人仲間がいて二人で歓待されました。うん、美味い!! やっぱ日本の米がいいなぁ。奥さん、おにぎり美味いです」
「そう、よかった」
三人は私のちょっと上の世代でしょうか。遅めの夏休みを過ごしているようです。レンタカーでヨーロッパを移動しているとのことでした。今度は旦那さんが、
「オスロにもう長くいるって、聞いたけど?」
「受付の彼が話したみたいですね」
「私たちが日本人だとわかると、すぐあなたのことを話してくれたよ」
「実は友人からの手紙を待ってたんです。いやぁ、物価は高いし長くいたくないんですけど、もう２週間ぐらいになります。でも１週間ほどはオスロ近郊を走ってました」
「確かにノルウェーの物価は高い。だから私たちもキャンプ場にするかって、ここに来たんだ。で、手紙の方は?」
「残念ですが１通だけ受け取れませんでした。大使館には５回も行ったんですけど、でも明日出発します。皆さんは?」
「私たちの夏休みもそろそろ終わりでね。明日はフェリーでハンブルクへ渡るんだ。最後にカジノでギャンブルをしようかって」
「カジノですか? ハンブルクは随分歩き回りましたが、カジノがあるなんて知りませんでした」
「カジノといってもホテルの中のカジノだからわからないかもしれないなぁ。でも結構有名だよハンブルクのカジノは、格式高いって。複数のホテルにあるはずだよ」
ラジカセから演歌が流れる中、アルコールなしでも色々と話はつきませんでした。「雨も降ってるし」ということで、結局この夜はロッジに泊めてもらうことになりました。
「カジノで一発当ててくださーい」
「はーい。じゃあねーッ」
早めのフェリーに乗るため早朝出発する彼らを見送ると、次はオランダへ向かう私が出発する番です。
「Ｈさん。ノルウェーからオランダへ渡ったらいいですよ。Kristiansand (クリスチャンサン)の港からオランダの Amsterdam (アムステルダム)行きのフェリーが出てます。僕もそれに乗りました」とＷ君から聞いていました。
オスロでは手紙を待って思いのほか長居になりました。[やっと出発できる] 正直な気持ちでした。それでも時間潰しのはずだったオスロ近郊の周遊ツアーには満足していました。
