Although last night’s rain had stopped, the sky remained overcast and the weather was anything but clear. I left the campground and headed for Kristiansand, where the ferry to the Netherlands departs. Since I was leaving on Saturday, I had already stocked up on food the day before. This would be my last chance to see the Holmenkollen ski jump, which I had glimpsed from afar so many times.
Kristiansand is an old port town located not far from the southern tip of Norway. Since it has an airport, it serves as a gateway for international travelers, much like Oslo. In particular, there are many ferry routes to cities along the North Sea coast.
The E18 highway connects Oslo and Kristiansand. According to the map, the distance is 325 kilometers, but of course, I plan to take side roads depending on the situation.
I wasn’t blessed with good weather along the way. Day after day, low-hanging clouds carried by strong winds brought light showers. Because of this, I couldn’t cover as much ground as I’d hoped, and although I’d planned to arrive in Kristiansand on the third day, I didn’t reach it until the evening of the fourth.
[An evening ferry would be nice, too. That way, I’d probably arrive in Amsterdam early the next day.] The route from Kristiansand to Amsterdam runs straight across the North Sea. It should take a fair amount of time. I figured I could sleep through the trip. As soon as I arrived in town, I headed straight for the ferry terminal at the harbor.
[Huh? …Wait, there’s no ferry to Amsterdam?! Oh no!!] The ticket counter for the Netherlands was closed. The bulletin board read, “Service ends Saturday, September 3.” Apparently, the day I left Oslo was the last day of service.
[Oh well, I’ll just head back to Denmark. I can go to the Netherlands via West Germany.] I’d already shifted gears mentally. I immediately went to the ferry terminal next door for ferries to Denmark. I confirmed a ferry to Hanstholm, Denmark, departing tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
Here are two photos I took on the way to Kristiansand.

As I was taking a break under the elevated tracks amid an occasional light drizzle, a small parade came trickling down the hill. So I snapped a photo of the baton girls at the front. Judging by the way they were looking at me, it seemed they were more interested in me than I was in them. It was a Sunday, and it looked like a local event.

This photo shows a lumber yard along the road. I thought it looked like a typical Norwegian scene, so I snapped a picture.
I’ve already checked the fare for the ferry to Denmark. After calculating what was left in my wallet, I decided to treat myself (?) for the last night and stay at a campground on the opposite side of the harbor. [Once I’ve had a shower and freshened up, I’ll be heading back to Denmark tomorrow?!] I gave myself a pep talk.
