Day 5 in Oslo. Today, I visited Bygdøy, a peninsula jutting out into the harbor. Bygdøy is home to several museums and is a popular tourist destination. It’s about a 20- to 30-minute trip from downtown by bus or by ferry from the pier in front of City Hall Square. Oslo City Hall faces the harbor, and the square also serves as a departure and arrival point for tour buses. Of course, I went by bicycle.
My first stop was the “Norwegian Folk Museum (Norsk Folkemuseum).” Admission is 10 NOK. This open-air museum was established in 1894. Within its spacious grounds, you’ll find historic buildings, as well as many folk art pieces and farming tools on display, offering a glimpse into life in Norway of yesteryear.
Next door is the “Viking Ship Museum,” but I skipped that and headed to the “Framhuset” (admission 5 NOK) at the tip of the peninsula.
You might not know what the Fram is, but the name Amundsen should ring a bell. At the end of the 19th century, Nansen sailed to the North Pole on this ship, the Fram, and Amundsen set out on a voyage to explore Antarctica in the early 20th century. The Fram, a sailing ship, had a rounded hull to prevent it from being crushed by ice pressure.
Next door is the “Kon-Tiki Museum.” Some of you might find the name vaguely familiar from the Japanese phrase “Konchikishō.” The Kon-Tiki is a single-masted raft built from balsa wood.
This is the very Kon-Tiki on which a Norwegian anthropologist—who claimed that “the descendants of the Polynesians are the Inca people of the Americas”—drifted from the coast of Peru to the South Pacific. Both museums demonstrate the exceptional maritime exploration skills of the Norwegians, descendants of the Vikings.
オスロ５日目。この日は港に突き出た半島 Bygdøy(ビグドイ)を訪ねてみました。ビグドイには複数の博物館があり観光スポットになっています。市内からバス、市庁舎広場前の桟橋からフェリーでともに20～30分ほどの距離です。オスロの市庁舎は港に面しており、広場は観光バスの発着場所にもなっています。 もちろん私は自転車で行きます。
最初に向かったのは「ノルウェー民俗博物館(Norsk Folkemuseum)」 入場料10Nkr。ここは1894年に開設された野外博物館です。広い敷地内に時代を感じさせる建物を始め、多くの民芸品や農具などが展示され、昔のノルウェーの生活を思い起こさせてくれます。
隣にあるのが「バイキング船博物館」、こちらはパスして次に向かったのは半島の先端にある「フラム号博物館(Framhuset)」 入場料５Nkr)です。
フラム号といってもわからないかもしれませんが、アムンゼンといえばピンとくるはずです。19世紀の終わりにこのフラム号でナンセンは北極へ、そしてアムンゼンは20世紀の初めに南極探索のための航海に出たのです。帆船のフラム号は、氷圧で壊されないよう船底が丸くなっていました。
隣には「コンチキ号博物館」があります。日本語の「こんちきしょう」から何となく聞き覚えがある人もいるのではないでしょうか。コンチキ号はバルサ材で造られた１本マストの筏です。
「ポリネシア人の子孫はアメリカ・インディアンのインカ人だ」と唱えたノルウェー人の人類学者が自らペルー沖から南太平洋まで漂流したのがこのコンチキ号です。どちらの博物館もバイキングの子孫ノルウェー人の海洋探検の能力の高さを証明しています。
This photograph shows the “Gol Stavkirke(Gol Stave Church),” a wooden church built around the 13th century and considered the symbol of the Norwegian Folk Museum. It was relocated here in 1885 following the construction of a new church in the town of Gol.
The word “stave” refers to a pole or support beam. Smaller churches typically have a single support beam, while larger ones have several beams erected inside. Beams are placed across these posts, and planks are assembled to form a structure resembling the hull of a ship.
The two figures visible besides the cross are dragon-head ornaments, similar to those found on Viking ships. These ornaments are said to serve as talismans against evil spirits. The church’s exterior is brown because it has been coated with tar to prevent rot. As the church ages further, the roof is covered not with thatch but with wooden shingles (?).
この写真はノルウェー民俗博物館のシンボル「ゴルのスターブヒルケ(GolStavkirke)」と呼ばれる13世紀頃に建てられた木造教会です。ゴルの町の教会の新築に伴い、1885年にこちらへ移築されたものです。
スターブには棒、支柱などの意味があります。小さな教会なら１本、大きくなるにつれ数本の支柱が内部に立てられます。その支柱に梁をかませ船底のように板を組み合わせていくのです。
十字架のほかに２本見えているのはバイキング船にも付けられる龍の頭の飾りです。この飾りには魔除けの役目があるそうです。教会の外観が茶色いのは腐食防止のタールが塗られているからです。さらに古くなると屋根は茅葺きならぬ板葺き(？)されます。

On my way back from Bygdøy, I stopped by the Japanese Embassy again to see if any mail had arrived. [Huh, is it already closed? I’ll have to come back tomorrow.] It was just past 4:00 p.m., and it seems the embassy closes at 4:00.
こちらはオスロフィヨルドの最深部、オスロ港の写真です。フラム号博物館の裏手から撮りました。手前の岩場で日光浴をしている人たちがいます。
ビグドイからの帰りに手紙が届いているかどうか再び日本大使館へ行ってみました。［あれ、もう閉まってるのか。また明日だな］時刻はまだ４時を過ぎたばかり、どうやら４時に大使館は閉まるようです。
