“Hello, how’s it going? Have you received any letters?”
“No, I haven’t received anything since then.”
“I see. Well, I guess I’ll have to try again. Actually…”
On my way back from Vigeland Sculpture Park, I stopped by the Japanese Embassy for the first time in four days, but the letters from my friend and W still hadn’t arrived. At that point, I decided to explain to the staff in detail why I was waiting for the letters.
“I’ve seen pretty much everything, so I feel like I’m done sightseeing in Oslo. I plan to head somewhere else starting tomorrow.”
“Where to? By bicycle?”
“Yes. I’ll be back in a week, so please take care of me then.”
[If the letters haven’t arrived yet, I’ll go for a ride around the Oslo area to kill some time. It’s better than just sitting around waiting, and it should be cheaper too.] That’s what I was thinking. On this day, I decided to visit the Holmenkollen Ski Jump (Holmenkollbakken) as the final stop on my Oslo sightseeing tour.
Since the ski jump is near the campground where I usually stay, I’d seen it from a distance on my way to and from Oslo, but I hadn’t actually been there yet. I figured I could go anytime since it was so close.
Naturally, the ski jump is located on a small hill. Just like at the Olympic ski jump in Innsbruck, Austria, I ended up having to push my bike up a steep slope partway up the hill.
「こんにちは、どうでしょうか。手紙届いてますか？」
「いいえ、その後は届いていません」
「そうですか。それじゃ、また出直しですね。実は……」
ヴィーゲラン彫刻公園の帰りに４日ぶりに日本大使館へ寄ってみたものの友人とＷ君からの手紙はまだ届いていませんでした。この時、私はどのような経緯で手紙を待っているのか職員に詳しく話すことにしました。
「一通り回って、もうオスロ観光はいいかなって感じです。明日からどこか行くつもりです」
「どこかって、自転車でですか？」
「はい。１週間したらまた来ますんで、宜しくお願いします」
［もし手紙がまだなら、時間潰しにオスロ近郊を走ってみよう。じっと待ってるよりいいし、お金もその方がかからないはずだ］そう思っていたのです。この日、オスロ観光の最後にホルメンコーレンのジャンプ台(Holmenkollbakken)に行くことにしました。
ジャンプ台は私が寝蔵にしているキャンプ場の近くということもあり、オスロ市内への行き帰りに遠目に見てはいましたが、まだ行ってなかったのです。近いのでいつでも行けると思っていました。
当たり前ですが、ジャンプ台は小高い丘の上にあります。オーストリアのインスブルックのオリンピック・ジャンプ台のときと同様、きつい坂道を途中から自転車を押し上げることになりました。
Near the ski jump was a “Ski Museum,” which was attracting many tourists. The ski jump had been completely renovated for the 1982 World Championships, making it newer than the one used during the Olympics.
ジャンプ台の近くには「スキー博物館」もあり多くの観光客が訪れていました。このジャンプ台は前年1982年の世界選手権の開催のために全面改修されており、オリンピック当時のものより新しくなっていました。
In this photo, you can see that there is a pond beneath the landing area. In the 2000s, the ski jump underwent a complete renovation, and stands were built around the pond. Nowadays, a stage is set up there in the summer, and concerts and events are held there.
この写真でランディングバーンの下に池があるのがわかります。二千年代に入ると再びジャンプ台は全面改修され、池の回りを囲むスタンドができました。今では夏になるとステージが設置され、コンサートやイベントが開催されるようになっています。
