I decided to ride along country roads again today. It looks like I’ll be entering Norway tomorrow anyway.
I pedaled leisurely along the river and through the marshes. Here and there, small villages appeared along the way.
[Huh, a dirt road? I can’t even remember the last time I rode on one.] It was only about 10 kilometers, but it really had been a long time since I’d ridden on an unpaved dirt road.
この日も田舎道を走ることにしました。どのみち明日にはノルウェーへ入国となりそうです。
川沿いをまた湖沼の間をぬうようにノンビリと自転車を走らせて行きます。道中、ポツンポツンと集落が現れます。
［ヘェ～、地道か。いつ以来だろう、思い出せないや］10キロほどでしたが、ほんとに久々に舗装されてない地道での走行になりました。
I stopped at a grocery store in a small village along the way to buy some juice and take a break. A young woman was sitting alone at the register.
“Good day.” “Hi,” came a half-hearted reply. [She looks bored.] There didn’t seem to be any other customers in the store. After browsing the shelves, I picked out a large bottle of juice and headed to the register; it cost 6.40 kroner (about 200 yen).
First, I handed over a 100-krona bill. Glancing into my wallet, I thought, [Oh, I’ve got some small change here], so I placed a 40-øre coin (100 øre = 1 krona) on the counter, followed by a 1-krona coin I found in the back of my wallet. The total came to 101.40 krona, so my change should be 95 krona. Of course, having managed to organize my change, I felt a little satisfied.
[Huh?…] After putting the bill and 5 kroner given as change into my wallet, I headed out of the store. […It felt like one was taken back just now…] Feeling uneasy, I took a 10-kroner bill out of my wallet and counted them. There were eight. Sure enough, one was missing. [Wait, did they shortchange me? I did feel something was off.] It was my mistake for not counting the bills right there.
What do you do in a situation like this? I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and think, “She didn’t mean any harm; she must have just made a mistake.” We were the only two people in the store, and I figured going back to talk to her wouldn’t get me anywhere.
Depending on the person, they might say, “Print out the sales record and check it against the cash in the register!!”
Hmm… Thinking about it now, I feel like I should have gone back to the store and clearly said, “You’re short one bill.”
If it was just a mistake, the cashier would probably be more careful with change from now on, and if there was any malice, she might think, “That was close,” which could help prevent future incidents. What do you think?
I’d inadvertently missed out on that change, but as I pedaled my bike, I found myself thinking, “If I’d had 10 kronor, I could’ve bought a beer.”
By the way, 10-kronor bills are no longer in use in Sweden. The currency currently in circulation consists of 20-kronor bills and 10-kronor coins.
途中の集落で休憩がてら食料品店にジュースを買いに入ってみました。レジを前にお姉チャンが一人座っています。
「グッ ダー(こんちは)」。「ハ～イ」と気のない返事が返ってきました。［暇そうだな］店内にお客さんはいないようです。色々と並ぶ中、大きめのボトル入りジュースを選んでレジへ、値段は6.40クローネ(約200円)です。
まず100クローネ紙幣を出して、財布をのぞくと［おッ、細かいのあるね］で、次に40オーレ(100オーレ＝１クローネ)、さらに財布の奥から見つけた１クローネをカウンターに並べました。合計101.40クローネ、お釣りは95クローネになります。もちろん小銭を整理できた私としてはチョッピリ満足です。
［ん?……］お釣りとして差し出されたお札と５クローネを財布にしまうとお店の外へ。［……今１枚引っ込めたような……］気になった私は財布から10クローネ札を出して数えてみました。８枚です。案の定１枚足りません。［えッ、１枚ごまかされたのか? 何か変な気がしたんだよな］その場でお札を数えなかった私のミスです。
こんな時どうしますか? 私は「悪意はない、間違えたんだろう」あえてそう思うことにしました。店内には二人きりでしたし、戻って話してもラチが明かないと考えたのです。
人によっては「販売記録をプリントアウトして、レジ内のお金と照合しろッ!!」ってなるかもしれませんね。
う～ん……今考えると「１枚足りません」と、お店に戻ってハッキリ言うべきだった、そんな気がします。
単なる間違いならお姉チャンはこれから釣り銭に気を付けるでしょうし、もし悪意があったのなら「ヤバかったな」と、この先の防犯になるかも知れませんし。どうでしょうか。
不覚にも、もらいそこなったお釣りですが［10クローネあったらビールが飲めたのになぁ］自転車を走らせながら、私はそんなふうに思っていました。
ちなみに、現在スウェーデンでは10クローネ札は使用していません。流通しているのは20クローネ札と10クローネ・コインです。
