The night before leaving for Sweden, I was poring over a map, trying to decide. [What should I do? Should I go to Stockholm? Or head straight to Oslo?]
It looks like it’s over 600 kilometers from Copenhagen to both Stockholm and Oslo. On the other hand, the distance between Stockholm and Oslo is a bit shorter—around 500 to 600 kilometers—so a week would be plenty of time to make the trip. That said, I’m not really worried about time at this point…
Between Denmark and Sweden lies the Øresund Strait (Øresund [Danish], Öresund [Swedish]), which connects the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.
If I were to head to Stockholm, the route would involve taking a ferry from the port in Copenhagen to the Swedish port city of Malmö. According to my research, the trip takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes; from Amager Island, across from Copenhagen where the airport is located, it takes less than an hour.
Currently, a 16-kilometer bridge and undersea tunnel connecting Amager Island to Malmö are open, making it possible to reach Sweden via land.
There was something that had been on my mind for a long time. “I’ll write a letter from Nepal to the Japanese Embassy in Oslo, so please make sure you receive it.” That was the promise I made to W when we parted ways in Athens. Of course, I had every intention of going to Oslo.
With that in mind, in the letter I sent from Switzerland to Japan, I wrote, “Please send any future correspondence to the Japanese Embassy in Oslo,” and included the embassy’s address myself.
It had been about a month since I sent the letter from Switzerland, but I had parted ways with W in mid-May—three months had already passed. I couldn’t help but worry about the letter, which should have arrived long ago. [Alright, I’ll just go to Oslo directly.] Of course, I also wanted to read the letter from Japan as soon as possible.
Once I’d made up my mind, I decided to take the shortest route. As a result, instead of leaving from Copenhagen, I chose to take a ferry to Sweden from the port town of Helsingør, about 40 kilometers to the north.
I headed north along the coast of the Øresund Strait. Since I’d stopped by an art museum that morning to look for a painting by Renoir, I didn’t arrive in Helsingør until after 6:00 PM.
Helsingør is home to Kronborg Castle. “To be or not to be, that is the question.” This is the famous soliloquy* from Shakespeare’s (1564–1616) tragedy, *Hamlet*, featuring the Danish prince.
* To be or not to be, that is the question. To die, to sleep, to sleep, perchance to dream. Aye, there’s the rub.
Kronborg Castle is the very setting for that play. I hear that Hamlet is performed inside the castle every summer. This castle is said to be a world-renowned landmark, attracting not only Shakespeare fans but also many castle enthusiasts, making it a popular tourist destination. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000.
I’m not particularly interested in Shakespeare or castles, but since I was there anyway, I planned to visit Kronborg Castle. Before that, I headed to the harbor to check the ferry terminal.
[Oh, look! I can see the castle!] To my surprise, I could see Kronborg Castle standing on a cape facing the strait, just north of the ferry terminal.
Even if I went to the castle now, it would already be closed. There were still ferry departures to Sweden, but the idea of entering the country at night felt a bit off. [Alright, I’ll stop by the castle tomorrow morning before crossing over to Sweden.] I decided to spend the night at the ferry terminal.
スウェーデンへ出発前夜、地図を見ながら悩んでいました。［どうしょうかな。ストックホルムに行くか? それとも直接オスロに行くか?］
コペンハーゲンからストックホルム、オスロ両都市へはともに600キロ以上ありそうです。一方、ストックホルムとオスロ間は少し短く500～600キロほど、１週間もあれば十分移動できます。と言っても、いまさら時間は気にならないのですが……。
デンマークとスウェーデンの間にはバルト海と北海を繋ぐエーレスンド海峡(Øresund[デ]、Öresund[ス])があります。
ストックホルムへ向かうのであれば、コペンハーゲンの港からフェリーでスウェーデン側の港町 Malmö(マルメ)へと渡るコース取りとなります。下調べでは所要時間１時間40分ほど、空港があるコペンハーゲンの対岸 Amager(アマー)島からなら１時間もかかりません。
現在、アマー島からマルメまでは長さ16キロの橋と海底トンネルが開通しており、陸路の延長でスウェーデンへ行けるようになっています。
私にはずっと気になっていることがありました。「Ｈさん、ネパールからオスロの日本大使館宛に手紙を書きますから、必ず受け取ってくださいよ」アテネで別れたＷ君との約束です。もちろんオスロへは行くつもりでした。
そのつもりでスイスから日本へ送った手紙には「次の連絡はオスロの日本大使館宛にお願いします」と自ら大使館の住所を記していました。
スイスから手紙を出したのは１ヵ月ほど前ですが、Ｗ君と別れたのは５月の半ば、すでに３ヵ月が経過しています。とうの昔に届いているはずの手紙がやはり気になるのです。［よし、やっぱ直接オスロへ行こう］ もちろん、日本からの手紙を早く読みたいという気持ちもありました。
そうと決まれば、最短コースを行くことになります。結果、コペンハーゲンからではなく40キロほど北の港町 Helsingør(ヘルシンオア)からフェリーでスウェーデンへと渡ることにしました。
エーレスンド海峡の海沿いを北上。この朝、美術館に寄って、ルノアールの絵画を探したこともあってヘルシンオアの街に着いたのは６時を回ってからでした。
ヘルシンオアにはクロンボー(Kronborg Slot)城というお城があります。「生きるべきか死ぬべきか、それが問題だ」有名なシェークスピア(1564-1616)の悲劇、デンマーク王子ハムレットの独白*です。

その舞台となったお城がクロンボー城なのです。毎夏、城内でハムレットが上演されるそうです。このお城は世界に知れた名城だそうで、シェイクスピアのファンだけでなく、お城のファンも多く訪れる観光名所になっています。2000年に世界遺産に指定されています。
私はシェイクスピアにもお城にも興味はありませんが、せっかくなのでクロンボー城へ行ってみるつもりでした。その前にまずフェリー乗り場を確認するために港へ。［なあ～んだ。お城が見えるじゃん］何とフェリー乗り場の北側、海峡に面した岬にクロンボー城が建っているのが見えたのです。
これからお城に行っても、もう閉まっている時間です。スウェーデンへのフェリー便はまだありますが、夜に入国するのは「何だかなぁ」という気がします。［よしッ、明日の朝お城に寄ってからスウェーデンへ渡ろう］この日はフェリー乗り場で一晩明かすことにしました。
