After dropping off our luggage at the hostel, we set out on our second day of sightseeing in Niagara with our bikes now lighter.
First, we headed to the sightseeing boat that most tourists take. When we walked down to the pier, there were already about 30 to 40 people waiting in the tented waiting area. And on the pier, the Maid of Mist, a diesel-powered boat with a capacity of about 100 passengers, was standing by. As the departure time approached, the number of passengers gradually increased.
Boarding finally began. We each picked up a black rubber raincoat and boarded, but when we actually slipped our arms into them, the inside was sticky, and they smelled funny.
“It smells kind of weird. What do you think, K?”
“Yeah, it smells pretty bad. The inside’s wet, too.”
“Yeah. I can’t tell if it’s water spray or sweat.”
“Man, this raincoat is gross.”
Regardless of how the two of us felt, the sightseeing boat set sail toward the American Falls, visible ahead of the pier. Compared to the Canadian Falls, it looked about half the size, but as we got closer, we could fully appreciate its magnitude.

The sightseeing boat gradually turned to the right and, fighting against the current, passed by Bridal Veil Falls—a charmingly named waterfall located right next to the American Falls. Soon, the boat began to rock from the force of the water plunging over the Canadian Falls, but undeterred, it continued to draw closer to the falls.
Suddenly, a massive spray of water hit us, and with a collective shout, everyone simultaneously pulled the hoods of their raincoats over their heads. This was no time to be complaining about the smell or anything else. When I looked up to gauge the height of the falls, it felt just like taking a shower—I couldn’t keep my eyes open. As if enjoying the situation, the boat slowed down and cruised right there.

The sightseeing cruise lasted less than 30 minutes, but we were able to fully enjoy the spray. (Currently, the sightseeing boats departing from the Canadian side are large, double-decker vessels, and the raincoats handed out upon boarding appear to have been replaced with disposable plastic ones.)
Niagara Falls Illuminated
We waited for nightfall and headed back to the falls together. The roar was as loud as ever, but the Canadian Falls, illuminated by a seven-colored cocktail of lights in the darkness, were indeed something special, just as Sandy had said. Along with their beauty, I could sense a certain mystique.
We sat on the railing and began sipping the whiskey we’d brought with us. I was reminded of the movie *Niagara*, which I’d seen late at night on TV.
I seemed to recall a scene where Niagara Falls was bathed in seven colors. As for the plot, the wife, played by Marilyn Monroe, conspires with her young lover to kill her husband, played by Joseph Cotten. However, the lover ends up being killed in a cave behind the falls, the wife is strangled on the Rainbow Bridge at the border, and the husband falls into the falls while trying to escape by boat—it’s packed with all the charm of Niagara. Regardless of the plot, the “Marilyn Walk” she performed in this film became a sensation and served as her breakthrough role. I remember, as a teenager, staring intently at the TV screen, my heart pounding with her charm.

“H, the Niagara Falls at night are beautiful, but this isn’t a place for two guys to come—it’s for couples.”
“Hmm. I guess you’re right about those seven-colored falls. K, you should come here on your honeymoon with your girlfriend.”
“You should come here yourself, H.”
“Ha ha ha…”
Our lighthearted conversation over whiskey continued for a while after that.
