Spain [26)]: the British Gibraltar

The next day, I plan to cross over to Morocco in Africa. Upon arriving in the city of Algeciras, I headed straight to the ferry terminal at the port to check it out. There were plenty of departures for both Tangier, Morocco, and Ceuta, Spain, so it didn’t seem like there would be any problems.

From the port, I could see the port of British Gibraltar on the opposite shore, 8 kilometers to the east across the Bay of Gibraltar. To be precise, on a small peninsula measuring 5 kilometers north to south and 1.2 kilometers east to west, I could see a small hill known as “The Rock,” a symbol of an impregnable port.

Gibraltar was originally Spanish territory and remains a source of concern for Spain, which hopes to reclaim it.

In the early 18th century, the War of the Spanish Succession began when Britain, the Netherlands, and Austria declared war on Spain and France. Subsequently, British forces successfully landed from the sea and occupied the area. Under the Treaty of Utrecht, Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain.

Although Gibraltar is a small peninsula jutting out into the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, it was a strategically important location at the time. Even now, more than three hundred years later, it continues to function as a British naval base.

Spain has repeatedly demanded through the United Nations that the UK return the territory, but the talks have made no progress whatsoever. With the UK’s withdrawal from the EU this year, all eyes are on Spain’s next moves.

Meanwhile, Spain is facing demands from Morocco for the return of the Spanish territory of Ceuta, but, just as with the UK, it appears Spain has no intention of complying.

After checking into a hotel near the port, W and I went out for dinner together.

“We’ve got hashish (cannabis resin)!”
“We’ve got hashish!”………

As obvious tourists, the two of us were approached by several cannabis dealers. I’ve heard that in Muslim countries where alcohol isn’t consumed, cannabis is used as a substitute. I felt an atmosphere that was truly befitting a port town serving as the gateway to Africa.

We hadn’t made any specific preparations for traveling to Africa, but considering how difficult it is to get alcohol in Muslim countries, we decided to buy two bottles of wine and stow one each in our side bags.

Since the cost of living is low in both Spain and Portugal, we were able to continue our leisurely cycling trip.

People sometimes ask me, “Are Spain and Portugal really that different?” Both countries possess a blend of “cheerfulness” and “simplicity,” but I feel these traits swing to opposite extremes. That balance creates a contrast that shines through in their national characters, and even now, more than 30 years later, I still have vivid memories of both countries.

Starting with the next installment, my journey through North Africa with W-kun begins—with only a map to guide us. The culturally distinct Islamic world was, as expected, full of surprises.

翌日にはアフリカの Morocco(モロッコ)に渡るつもりです。 モロッコの Tangier(タンジール)行、スペイン領 Ceuta(セウタ)行とも、数多くあり問題はなさそうです。
