With the rain falling almost every day and the cold weather, my heart was set entirely on Spain. Andrew had told me that ferries to Spain depart from Plymouth, a port town in southern England. My destination was Plymouth Harbor.
Even so, I couldn’t resist the pleasure of having a drink. I stayed at a B&B in a small town just before Liverpool; conveniently, there was a pub downstairs, which was perfect for me. After taking a bath (happily, it was a tub), I went downstairs and had two beers. In the rain, I bought some fried cod, chips, beans, and tea for £1 at a fish-and-chips shop on a side street.
When I returned to the pub, the two customers who had been there a moment ago seemed to have left, and the barmaid was sitting all alone behind the counter.
“Can I get a beer?”
“Oh, you’re drinking again? Same as before?”
“There aren’t any other customers. It’s pretty slow, isn’t it?”
“It’s raining, after all. Plus, it’s a small town, so we don’t get that many customers. It’s always enough for just me.”
As I sipped my second beer, our casual conversation continued.
“Hey, can I smoke?”
“Oh, sorry. I’ve been smoking all by myself. Here, have one. Want this one?”
Saying that, I offered her a Marlboro, but she
“No, this one,”
she said, pulling out her own cigarettes. They came in a black box with a stylish design in gold lettering.
“That’s a cool package. What brand are they?”
“John Player Special. They’re British cigarettes.”
Looking closely, I saw the gold letters formed the initials JPS.
“Want to try one?”
“Is that okay? Then I’ll have one.”
I took a puff of the cigarette she offered.
“This cigarette’s good. It might even be better than Marlboro.”
“It’s good, isn’t it? I’ve been smoking this for ages.”
“Still, no customers are coming in. It’s hard to do anything with just me here.”
“I don’t think we’ll get any more business today.”
“Well, actually, when the conversation was going well, the guy next door bought me a Scotch, so I had a good time.”
“Oh, really? Well then, I’ll buy you a drink tonight.”
“Buy me a drink? No way, if I let you do that, I won’t make any money.”
“Don’t be shy. What’ll you have? Scotch?”
“Really? Well, I won’t say no then. A double.”
“Okay. It doesn’t look like any more customers are coming in, so maybe I’ll have a drink too.”
“Oh, that sounds great. Let me buy you one.”
“What are you trying to be so cool for? You’re on a budget trip, after all.”
“Ha ha ha. You’re absolutely right.”
She started pouring her favorite beer from the tap.
Cigarettes are a matter of personal taste; everyone has their own preferences. The JPS she recommended is, in a word, a cigarette that tastes and smells like a classic, traditional cigarette. I liked that about it, so I smoked it the whole time I was in the U.K.
As I wrote in my blog before, I usually made a point of smoking the most popular brand in the country I was visiting, but whenever I found JPS, I couldn’t help but cheat on my usual choice and smoke it.
I ended up quitting smoking during my stay in Germany, but if someone asked me, “Which cigarette would you like to smoke right now?” I’d answer “JPS” without hesitation. Cigarette taxes are high in the U.K., and back then, a pack of JPS cost over 400 yen.

「John Player Special、
