A Letter from Jeff
Before leaving Japan, I had received a letter from Jeff, Ms. Paula’s elder brother. The letter mentioned that materials such as *The American Bicycle Atlas*, published by A.Y.H. (American Youth Hostels), were available at youth hostels. It also mentioned that there was an organization called Bike Centennial in Montana that provided route guidance and travel support.

He mentioned that the best route to his house was along the coastline, which offered great views and was dotted with campgrounds, among other things. What really caught my attention, though, was the part where he wrote that he had completed a cross-country race from San Francisco to New York in 13 and a half days. That’s at least 5,000 km, and it includes crossing the Rockies. I really wanted to ask him about it in person.
I picked up some materials at a youth hostel in Los Angeles, but since they were all in English, there was only so much I could understand.
Setting off to meet Mr. A’s work schedule
I stayed at Mr. A’s place for a week. I took full advantage of his kindness, touring downtown LA by car and visiting the construction sites he’d arranged for me. The night before I left,
“H, here’s the address and phone number of M, an acquaintance of mine who lives in San Francisco. He said you’re welcome to contact him, so you should stop by.”
With that, he handed me a note.
“Thank you so much for everything. I’ll definitely stop by.”
The next morning at 8:00 AM, I set off to coincide with Mr. A’s commute.
“If you run into any trouble, be sure to contact me. Okay?”
“Yes, I understand. Well then, I’m off.”
