American Highways
In the United States, major highways are numbered with odd numbers for north-south routes and even numbers for east-west routes, making them easy to understand. Highways are broadly divided into three categories: U.S. Interstate Highways, U.S. Highways, and State and Provincial Highways.
One slight complication with U.S. Highways is that while cycling is generally permitted in suburban and rural areas, it is prohibited in urban areas. I headed north on State Highway 1, which runs along the coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
As Jeff said, the route through green forests with views of the blue ocean was a great choice. For lodging, I tried to use campgrounds as much as possible for safety and convenience.
Campground Fees
Campground fees for hikers and cyclists, whether public or private, are 50 cents in California, $1 in Oregon, and around $2–$3 even in more expensive areas. The facilities are very simple, consisting of restrooms and showers.
However, there is a campground chain in North America called KOA. While the fees are higher—starting at $5—these sites are well-equipped with convenience stores and playgrounds for children, and some even offer hot showers. I often saw retired couples traveling across the U.S. in RVs, making use of these facilities.
Wind from the North
On the third day after leaving Los Angeles, the wind was so strong I couldn’t make any headway. The luggage felt heavy. I’m pedaling even on the downhill slopes. I had vaguely noticed it myself: although I’d passed cyclists on the way here, I hadn’t seen a single cyclist heading north.
I later heard that during this season, a weak seasonal wind from the north always blows along the West Coast, so most cyclists take the route heading south. In the end, this seasonal wind plagued me with occasional strong gusts all the way to Vancouver, Canada.

アメリカン・ハイウェイ
アメリカの幹線道路は南北にはしる道路は奇数、東西は偶数で表記されており解りやすくできています。ハイウェイは U.S. Interstate highways、U.S. highways、State and Provincial highways の３つに大きく分けられます。
ちょっと厄介なのが U.S. ハイウェイで、郊外や地方では自転車の走行は問題ありませんが、都市部では禁止されていることです。私は、ロスからシスコまで海岸線をはしる州ハイウェイ１号線を北上しました。
ジェフの言うように青い海を眺めながら緑の森を抜けて行くルートはナイスチョイスでした。泊まりは安全性や利便性を考え、できるだけキャンプ場を利用するようにしました。
キャンプ場の料金
ハイカーやバイカーのキャンプ場の利用料金は公営・民営ともに、カリフォルニア州で50￠、オレゴン州で１＄、そのほか高い所でも２～３＄程です。設備はいたってシンブルでトイレにシャワー。
ただ北米には KOA というキャンプ場のチェーン店があり、料金は５＄以上と高いのですが、キャンプ場内にはコンビニや子供用の遊び場などが整い、ホットシャワーが利用できる場合もあります。このような施設を利用しながら、全米をキャンピングカーで旅行しているリタイア後のご夫婦をよく見かけました。
北からの風
ロスを出て３日目、風が強くて前に進みません。荷物が重く感じられます。下り坂でもペダルを漕いでいます。私も薄々気がついていました。ここまで走ってきてすれ違うサイクリストはいても、北上するサイクリストがいないことに。
のちに聞いた話しでは、この時期西海岸では常に北からの弱い季節風が吹いているようで、ほとんどのサイクリストは南下のコースをとるそうです。結局この季節風は、カナダのバンクーバーまで時おり強風となって私を悩ませました。
