North America [9]: No 26-inch tires!

It was my second day in Oregon, and I had my first flat tire. I’d only covered just under 2,000 km since leaving Los Angeles, but my Japanese-made tires were wearing down faster than I’d expected—the tire cords were completely exposed.

I repaired the flat, swapped the front and rear tires, and set off again. I was planning to arrive in Coos Bay, a large town, the day after tomorrow, where I intended to get new tires.

Coos Bay is a port town. I immediately started looking for a bike shop and found one called “Moe’s.”

“Excuse me. I’m looking for 26-inch tires. Do you have any?”

The owner, Jim, looked at my worn-out tire and said,

“Nope. People don’t really ride 26-inch bikes here in the U.S. Especially not this 650B size.”

It’s true—I hadn’t seen any either.

“I’ll call the wholesaler in San Francisco right now, so please wait a moment.”

After talking on the phone for a while,

“They say they have that size. That’s great. I’ll place the order—what do you want to do?”

“Please do. Three of them. Japanese tires are too soft, so I’d like something other than Japanese. I think European-made ones would be best.”

“OK. European-made it is.”

After the call, Jim hung up and said,

“The tires will arrive next Tuesday or Thursday.”

“Um, today is Saturday. That’ll take a while. Well, I’ll come back next week.”

The Tire Situation

Back then in the U.S., it was difficult to find 26-inch tires at regular shops. In Europe, on the other hand, they were available everywhere. The black Michelin tires I used in Europe were surprisingly durable.

It’s a bit of an exaggeration, but they were as thick as trailer tires—I think they were 650 42B or 45B—and even though the tread was worn down, I was able to ride over 9,000 km without a single flat.
