For this trip, I brought along all the gear I normally use, from a camping stove to a sleeping bag. However, when it came to the tent, I bought a new Gore-Tex shelter because of its light weight (just over 1 kg) and ease of setup (1–2 minutes), but that turned out to be a mistake.
It might have been fine if I were just sleeping in it, but on rainy days I had no choice but to cook inside the tent, and it was simply too cramped.
What really came in handy in those situations was the SVEA 123, which is said to be used by the Swedish military. It’s compact, powerful, and easy to use. It has a fuel capacity of 130 cc; while it requires preheating, it doesn’t need pumping. When full, it burns for about 45 minutes. It boils 500 cc of water in 3–4 minutes.
この旅行には、コンロから寝袋まですべてふだん使用している用具を持参しました。ただ、テントだけは軽さ（１㎏強）と簡便さ（設営１～２分）を考慮して、ゴアテックスのシェルターを新調しましたが、失敗でした。
寝るだけならともかく、やむなく雨の日にはテント内で炊飯をしますが、いかんせん狭すぎました。そんなときに活躍してくれたのが、スウェーデンの軍隊も使うといわれる SVEA(スベア)123です。
コンパクトで火力が強く、扱いやすい。燃料容量は130㏄ですがプレヒートを必要とするものの、ポンピングは不要です。満タン時の燃焼時間は約45分。500㏄の水なら3-4分で沸騰します。
In the U.S., white gas is called Coleman fuel and is available everywhere, but it’s usually sold in gallon cans, which were inconvenient to carry around on a bicycle. I gave my gallon cans away to others in exchange for beer and other items, and instead had them pour white gas into the fuel bottles I’d brought with me whenever I needed it.
In Europe, gas cartridges were easier to find, so I used a gas stove.
Having learned my lesson with the one-person shelter, I decided to prioritize livability over weight for my trip around Japan after returning home, so I used a two-person tent.

アメリカでは白ガソリンはコールマンガスと呼ばれ、どこでも手に入りますが、ガロン缶が多く、自転車で持ち運ぶには不便でした。私はガロン缶を他人に譲り、ビールなどと交換するかたちで、持参した燃料ボトルに、そのつど白ガソリンを分けてもらうようにしました。
ヨーロッパではガスカートリッジの方が手に入りやすく、ガスコンロを使用しました。
1人用シェルターには懲りたので、帰国後の日本一周には軽さを捨て、居住性を第一に考え2人用テントを使用しました。
