I wasn’t interested in sightseeing around the city, but there was one place I really wanted to visit: a brewery. Well, to be honest, I just wanted the free beer tasting after the tour. An American guy I’d had a drink with at a campground had told me, “If you’re going to Niagara Falls, you should definitely stop in Michigan on the way and try some craft beer. It’s delicious.”

Older folks will probably recognize this. It’s a commercial jingle by a Japanese beer manufacturer that sings about the world’s beer-producing regions between 43 and 48 degrees north latitude.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is home to major beer manufacturers like the world-famous Miller and Pabst, known for its Blue Ribbon brand. On the other hand, across Lake Michigan in Michigan, there are many small breweries known as “microbreweries.”

Thinking I might go on the factory tour alone, I decided to ask the New Zealander staying in the room next to mine—whom I’d met at check-in and exchanged greetings with—if he’d like to join me. He was around my age and also loved beer, so we quickly agreed to go together the next day. (I’ve forgotten his name)
To gather information on breweries, we first went to the tourist information center near the Y.M.C.A. Luckily, he looked everything up for me and even planned the trip. There are several breweries in and around Detroit, and we decided to visit one of them.
According to him, we could have walked there, but due to the tour schedule, we decided to take the bus.
While we were talking, I noticed that his English pronunciation was a little different from what I’d heard before. For example, “Chicago” is usually pronounced the same way as the Japanese katakana “Shikago.” I’m not sure if it was a New Zealand accent or not, but when he said “Chicago,” it sounded like “Chikago.” The “chi” sound was pronounced with a strong “t” sound, just like in “chicken.” Since I’m not very good at listening, I often had to ask him to repeat himself during our conversation.
When we arrived at the brewery, the tour began shortly after. Besides the two of us, there were five or six other participants. The tour lasted about 30 minutes, but the explanations were full of technical terms, so I didn’t really understand much. Or rather, I was so eager to drink the beer that I might have been tuning out.

There were several types of beer available for tasting. Each was poured into a glass from a tap. There was only one type of beer snack: the classic American pretzel, made from hard-baked dough. You know, the one that looks like a heart-shaped puzzle with twisted rings stacked on top of each other. Although it seems to have originated in Germany, pretzels are a common beer snack in the U.S.
As for the beer itself, I was able to sample every variety. The differences in taste and bitterness depending on the brewing method, as well as the variations in flavor from the hops—for someone like me who usually drinks easy-to-drink beers like Budweiser or Coors—each beer seemed to assert its own distinct character, and I really enjoyed them. Both of us ended up ordering refills of the beers we liked. Of course, we bought our favorite beers to take home.
