Satisfied with our beer tour, I set off once again for Canada. To reach Windsor, Ontario—Canada’s southernmost city, located across the Detroit River—I decided to take the Ambassador Bridge, a suspension bridge over 2,000 meters long.

The Ambassador Bridge is located south of Detroit, near an interchange where many highways converge. When I arrived, I saw signs on the bridge prohibiting pedestrians and bicycles… I had no idea. (Fifty years after its completion, a wealthy individual purchased the bridge, making it privately owned; vehicles must pay a toll to cross.)
[Oh man. What am I going to do?] As for other transportation options, the Michigan Central Railroad connects to the Canadian side via a rail-only tunnel. (Currently, the Michigan Central Station on the U.S. side has been decommissioned.) Another option is to take a public bus that runs through a vehicle-only tunnel.
Both options would require me to transport my bike, but carrying a bike bag and luggage felt like too much of a hassle, so I didn’t consider them from the start. After thinking it over, I decided to try hitchhiking.
Holding a cardboard sign with “CANADA” written in big letters in marker, I stood there relentlessly at a spot near the bridge entrance where cars could easily pull over. Many cars drove by, but there was absolutely no sign of any stopping.
I waited for an hour, then two… I tried changing locations and even changed my destination from “CANADA” to the city name “WINDSOR,” but it was no use. I had started hitchhiking before noon, and now it was 4:00 PM.
For the time being, I decided to head back to the downtown Y.M.C.A. I planned to decide the next day whether to try hitchhiking again or find another way to cross into Canada.
