Portugal [17]: Preparing for a Trip to North Africa

I hadn’t seen W since our year-end party at the restaurant.

Since the new year began, there’s been no sign that he’s running his jewelry shop. I hadn’t seen him for about a week, but I felt it was about time to start making plans for our trip to North Africa.

Lisbon was a city where I felt very much at home. That’s exactly why I felt, deep down, that I had to leave soon.

That day, I cut my fishing trip at the harbor short and stopped by the guesthouse where W was staying.

I happened to run into the leader of a group of Japanese street vendors—known as “the President”—in front of the guesthouse. I’d had dinner with him a few times; he was in his late 30s, and we were on friendly terms.

“Oh, President, hello. Is W here?”

“W? He was at his girlfriend’s place yesterday; it looks like he hasn’t come back yet.”

“Is that so? Well, I actually came by because I wanted to start discussing the details of our trip to Africa. I see—he’s at his girlfriend’s place.”

“That makes sense. They said they were going to Africa together, didn’t they?”

“President, I’m sorry to ask this, but could you please give him this note?”

“Sure, no problem. I’ll make sure to give it to him.”

“Okay, thanks.”

“H, be careful in Africa.”

“Yes, thank you. Well then, I’ll be going.”

Anticipating that I might not be able to meet W, I had prepared the note in advance, intending to have someone at the guesthouse pass it on to him. The note read:

“I’d like to discuss our trip to Africa, so please get in touch. I’m fishing at the harbor during the day. I’m at the youth hostel in the mornings and evenings.”

I decided to wait for him to contact me.

Toward the end of last year, until I left for Porto, W and I often had the chance to hang out—eating meals and having drinks together.

He never asked me about how he met my girlfriend or how their relationship began, but he often talked about her, his words tinged with pride. However, what stuck in my memory—even though I’d never actually met her—was a different side of him.
