Spain [23]: Spring is just around the corner, isn’t it?

The two of us set off once again on our cycling trip toward Algeciras, the port town from which the ship to Africa departs.
The winds blowing in from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean made it feel nothing like late January, and we kept up a brisk pace.

“H, it’s nice and warm, isn’t it? At this rate, it’ll surely be even warmer once we get to Africa.”
“I hope so. Anyway, I just hope it doesn’t get cold.”

W, who was riding ahead of me, suddenly stopped his bike and, looking at the flowers blooming beside an earthen wall, said,

“There are flowers blooming—white ones. What kind of tree is that?”
“Hmm, I wonder. I don’t know. They kind of look like peach blossoms, though.”

Just then, an older man riding a donkey cart passed by. W pointed at the tree with the flowers and called out loudly,

“Señor! Qué~?” (Sir! What~?)
“Almendras~!!” (It’s almonds~!!)

「Señor!

“He mentioned something called ‘Almendra.’ What’s that?”
“Oh, ‘Almendra’ means ‘almond.’ I’ve heard they look like cherry or peach blossoms. But this is the first time I’ve ever seen them.”
“Wow. So these are almond blossoms? This is my first time seeing them, too.”

Looking across the street, we could see white flowers blooming all along the riverbank.

“W, shall we take a break over there?”
“Sure, maybe we could make some coffee.”

While we waited for the water to boil, the two of us lay on our backs, spread-eagled, on the carpet of flowers. The sunlight warming our entire bodies seemed to be telling us that spring was just around the corner.
