On the Iberian Peninsula before it was unified under the Kingdom of Spain, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity seem to have coexisted to a certain extent, each recognizing the others. Even in Andalusia, where there was a large Muslim population, once the expulsion of Muslims began in the Middle Ages, a group known as the “Moriscos”—people who had been forced to convert from Islam to Catholicism—emerged.
However, it’s hard to imagine that conversion was that simple. It seems some people became secret Muslims. Perhaps as a remnant of that era, when driving through this region, you occasionally come across some peculiar-looking churches. These are churches that feature a small cross perched atop a building that resembles a mosque.

(Although Spain is a predominantly Catholic country, religious freedom is now recognized, and a few percent of the population is Muslim.)
Further south, we pass through Jerez de la Frontera—the birthplace of flamenco and a city synonymous with sherry—on our way to the port city of Cádiz.
Founded over 3,000 years ago, Cádiz is one of the oldest cities on the Iberian Peninsula. After the discovery of the New World, Columbus set sail again from this port. As it later served as a key port for trade with the colonies, it was attacked numerous times by the British Navy.

That day, we decided to pitch our tent on the beach just outside the city of Cádiz. The waves lapped gently against the shore, and the sun sank beyond the Atlantic, casting a red glow across the water. We were now less than 100 kilometers from Algeciras.
